Israeli Succession
Frequently asked questions for heirs living outside Israel
If a relative left assets in Israel — a bank account, an apartment, pension funds — and you live in another country, in most cases the whole process can be handled without travelling. Here are answers to the most common questions.
Do I have to travel to Israel to handle the succession?+
In most cases, no. You sign a power of attorney in favour of the office in your country, and from Tel Aviv we handle the whole process before the Israeli authorities, the banks and the Land Registry. We stay in touch by email, phone, WhatsApp or video call.
What is a succession order and a probate order?+
They are the official documents that determine who the heirs are of a deceased person with assets in Israel. If there is no will, a succession order (צו ירושה) is requested; if there is a will, a probate order (צו קיום צוואה). Without one of them, banks and the Land Registry will not release the assets.
Is a will made outside Israel valid?+
In many cases, yes. A will made in another country can be submitted in Israel for probate, together with the relevant documents and translations. We review the will and tell you what is needed.
Which documents do I need?+
Usually: the death certificate, documents proving the family relationship (birth or marriage certificates), the will if there is one, and your ID. Foreign documents usually need an apostille in the country that issued them and a translation. Once we review your case, we send you the exact list.
Where do I sign the power of attorney if I live abroad?+
We prepare the text of the power of attorney. You sign it in your country, usually at the Israeli consulate or before a local notary with an apostille, and send us the original. We explain every step so nothing goes wrong.
How long does it take?+
It depends on each case: whether there is a will, how many heirs there are, whether anyone files an objection, and how long documents from abroad take to arrive. When we study your case we give you a realistic estimate.
How are bank accounts and property released?+
Once the order is issued, we submit it to the banks to release the funds and to the Land Registry (Tabu) to register the property in the heirs' names. We can also assist you if you decide to sell the property.
Is there inheritance tax in Israel?+
Israel currently does not levy inheritance tax. However, selling an inherited property may have tax consequences, and your country of residence may have its own rules. We recommend asking before making decisions.
In which language will I be assisted?+
In Spanish, English or Hebrew. Advocate Mariel Epelman personally handles your case in your language.
How much does it cost?+
Fees depend on the complexity of the case. We send you a clear written quote before starting. Notarial services have fees fixed by law. Prices are in shekels plus VAT (18%).
